You’re not ready for this Jelly.
Within seconds of Slime Girl Smoothies, I knew what I was in for. Or, at least, what I assumed. I’m no stranger to fan service when it comes to games, being a huge fan of the Senran Kagura series, but Slime Girl Smoothies is the first puzzle game I’ve played that is specially designed around being that of a very adult game. Whereas the likes of Senran Kagura plays more to being very tongue and cheek, well, Slime Girl Smoothies dives a bit deeper with those tongues, and definitely those cheeks.
Slime Girl Smoothies places you in the role of the new Floor Manager at Slimey’s, a Slime Girl Bar, one run by Miss Berry, a woman you’ll meet within the game’s opening moments. She teaches you the ins and outs of the bar, her staff, and how they use their bodies, specifically their breasts, to fashion the various cocktails the bar is famous for. The drinks they will fashion use every last bit of juice needed to present their flavor and especially their taste to a clientele that is likely there for a bit more than those tasty beverages.
As you join the staff, you’ll start out with Cherry, an upbeat Slime Girl as shown above who is eager to show you the ropes. Cherry is here as a bit of an introduction to the game’s overall mechanics, acting as the tutorial chapter for all four girls. While she lacks some of the deeper gameplay concepts present across Mint, Plum, and Miss Berry herself, she nonetheless is a great starter point to grasp just exactly what this puzzle game offers apart from its sexual content, even if Cherry is very eager to introduce you to those elements as well.
Initially, I assumed that Slime Girl Smoothies was going to be a typical Match-3 game. While part of that is true, it’s a bit more involved than that. The central gameplay has you pulling from a collection of prepared fruit to work into the jug. Each recipe has a different percentage of fruit that you attempt to match up. Each fruit has a layout of how their juices will fill that jug and is indicated by color as well, complete with a Combo list that is apparent at all times. Need purple for the jug? Combine or place down fruit that has red and blue to do so.
As you place fruit, you’ll have to pay attention to the percentage chart in between the jug and combo chart. If you need 40 orange but 9 purple, then you know you have to prioritize blue and red more so than red and yellow, often getting the job done by placing some yellow on the spent red juice, an act that will pull less red than that of pairing alongside a fresh placement. It’s an interesting system that I wasn’t initially keen on, finding that RNG for the available fruit wasn’t always getting the job done. While your first shift is just a pair of drinks, you’ll eventually move on to having to make three, four, and five drinks, wrapping up your time with a girl after four shifts. It’s a shame that each girl didn’t have an extended chapter to get to know them more. While there are additional modes to play, they don't feature a narrative and only offer an endurance mode where you cannot fail a single drink or a time trial mode to frantically mix to.
Once the drink is prepared with each metric attained, the girls will take the jug and consume it, pulling it into their translucent bodies as they mix the drink within their breasts, shaking them in their own unique way. Once that process is completed, they then prepare the cocktail by shooting the finished drink out, squeezing their breasts until every last drop is given to their customer. And since the alcohol is flowing through their bodies, they also end their shift a bit tanked and left a bit wanting for you, eventually rewarding you with some alone time once you’ve completed their four shift arc.
Once you move on to Mint or Plum, each girl has a mechanic that lessens or increases her earnings, depending on their chest size. As mint has a considerably smaller chest size than the others, she has randomly placed zones within the jug that decreases how much juice is pulled from the ingredients placed. Plum; however, packs a massive chest and therefore has zones within her jug that greatly increase her earns. It’s a tad bizarre that Plum wasn’t the tutorial Slime Girl as each of her challenges is a breeze, often cruising through as if it was easy mode. If anything Cherry and Mint are the most difficult to play as Berry features both decrease and increase zones, for some reason.
Eventually, during your time with Cherry, you’ll be introduced to being able to cut fruit both horizontally or vertically, giving you a slice of that ingredient to use up less space, maybe cutting off a color you don’t need. My only gripe is that you can’t determine what side you are cutting off as it is set in its ways. Still, getting a bit of extra space is crucial as the jug only has so much space and you have to make sure your inclusion of a certain color doesn’t exceed 100 or it's a wash. You can also dump a drink and fail it by pressing X, which I accidentally did and had to redo the entire session. Lastly, you’ll then be able to rotate a fruit layout, which is only really beneficial to those that are not symmetrical. This is something I ended up relying on a great deal in the game’s last few moments. It’s a shame that you cannot go through the four girls again from the start in a different order with every trick you have up your sleeve by the end. While there are those additional modes, it’s a shame there is no free play without the constraints of endurance or a timer.
While Cherry is the energetic one, as well as being very welcoming, offering for you to take “these puppies for a shake” should the night go well, and it does, and you do, the other girls each have varying personalities that you’ll get to know. Between each shift, you’ll talk with them, or rather, they will talk to you. Mint is a bit guarded, likely due to not trusting too many people, and Plum is a bit shy, unsure of her worth and wanting a bit of confidence thrown her way. Berry is confident, seductive, and demanding, but never harsh, only looking to ensure the well-being of her girls, especially with you being a newcomer to them and the bar.
What helps this game work isn’t the gameplay, or even the very adult dialogue or sexual scenes you’ll unlock as you play, which reveal far more than I’ve seen on the Nintendo Switch so far, but that of its unique personality. This is present in the game’s slick presentation and its stellar voice work. Each of the girls has an extremely great performance by a group of NSFW lewd voice actors, several of which are Lewdtubers/Vtubers in the adult space. Ivy_WildeVA, Kumbomb, MidnightDatura, and MidnightBlu, are all fantastic here, breathing life and personality into these girls and delivering dialogue that works well towards their unique voices.
The presentation of the game’s artwork is also fairly well done, if lacking the detailed clarity I wish it had. I also find that most of the tutorial text is nearly impossible to read when playing portable. Most of the artwork can feel a tad blurry on the Switch as well, which is unfortunate. While there are animations, they are a rapid series of static images more so than smooth animation that flows naturally. It’s basically like how visual novels tackle rapid movement. Each girl has two rewards for you during their respective arcs, offered at the end of day two and four, as well as additional scenes available in the bonus art that shows how “friendly” the girls are towards one another.
Slime Girl Smoothies was far more adult than I was expecting, and while those elements do work well, largely because of the voice acting and presentation, the core gameplay did leave a lot to be desired through a very slow initial chapter. Once you start to gain additional tools and have more mechanics given to you, the game opens up considerably and becomes far more fun. While there are additional modes to keep it going, I sort of wish that each girl had a longer storyline as each girl is often over and done with before you really get to know them. Regardless, if you are taken in by its very adult nature and want something lewd and enjoyable, there is a solid few hours here that do entertain, with a collection of Slime Girls that are very eager to please you.
