Publisher 2K has stated that its long-awaited release in Borderlands 3 has sold over five million copies during its first five days since the game released on September 13th. This makes the game its fasting selling game in the company’s history.
When put into context alongside Borderlands 2’s release, it is approximately 50 percent more in the same launch window. Borderlands 2 went on to sell over 20 million units since release.
Despite the widespread backlash regarding the title being exclusive to the Epic Games, and the rounds of controversy surrounding Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, 2K mentioned in a press release that:
"Borderlands 3 delivered the highest pre-order sales figures to date for a 2K title, as well as broke pre-order records with the Epic Games Store. Initial sales of Borderlands 3 have exceeded the label’s expectations and, in particular, PC sales of the title through the Epic Games Store have been incredibly strong."
It’s also interesting hearing about digital sales given the shift from physical purchases to digital ones that have put stores like Gamestop out of business, or close to it. It seems that out of the 5 million copies sold in the first five days, over 70& of all sales were digital, showing a strong change in the market that has been becoming the standard for several years now.
Borderlands 3 is a massive release for 2K and one that is currently not plagued with loot boxes or insane microtransaction practices. Stay tuned to Analog Stick Gaming for our Borderlands 3 review soon.
