Ruby Rose announced today that she would not be returning to the role of Kate Kane, aka Batwoman when the show picks up next January for its second season. While no exact reason was given for her departure, it was stated that her injury during season one was not part of her exit.
In a statement via Deadline, she had this to say:
“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season.
This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”
"I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created."
The creators of the show are obviously saddened to hear that Rose will not be returning and commented further that they would recast the role with another LGBTQ actress.
“The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”
Batwoman, much like Supergirl have been huge targets for a vocal tearing down of the shows due to their focus on empowered female roles. While it’s unclear of this is part of the reason for Rose leaving the show, it can certainly be a struggle to combat much of the hate being spread anonymously online. Since the report of her leaving the show, every outlet’s comments sections have been incredibly ugly and mean spirited, praising that Rose has left the show and that “the writers should do the same.” I personally have enjoyed Batwoman and it’ll certainly be hard to picture where the series will go next with what I felt was it’s biggest draw in casting the talented Ruby Rose.
