The Embracer Group, a Swedish video game holding company known for acquiring such development studios as Gearbox Interactive and Sabre Interactive, not to mention over 70 other studios, has entered into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal from Square Enix for a cool $300 Million.
The deal will also come loaded with more than 50 IPs such as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain. Shared via a press release on their official website, this acquisition will see roughly 1,100 employees across the three studios fall under the Embracer group going forward when the deal is expected to close during Q2 of Embracer’s financial year for 2022 and 2023.
Lars Wingefors, Co-Founder and Group CEO of Embracer Group, said the following:
”We are thrilled to welcome these studios into the Embracer Group. We recognize the fantastic IP, world class creative talent, and track record of excellence that have been demonstrated time and again over the past decades. It has been a great pleasure meeting the leadership teams and discussing future plans for how they can realize their ambitions and become a great part of Embracer.”
Phil Rogers, the CEO for Square Enix America and Europe, followed up with:
”Embracer is the best-kept secret in gaming: a massive, decentralized collection of entrepreneurs whom we are thrilled to become a part of today. It is the perfect fit for our ambitions: make high-quality games, with great people, sustainably, and grow our existing franchises to their best versions ever. Embracer allows us to forge new partnerships across all media to maximize our franchises’ potential and live our dreams of making extraordinary entertainment.”
If and when this massive deal goes through, Embracer will see more than 14,000 employees working around over 200 games, with more than 30 being recognized as AAA releases. Embracer has been a dominating force in acquisitions, picking up a wealth of talented developers and notable IP.
